Life in color: How Sonja Brstina reconstructed the apartment into a family home (video)

We invite you to take a peek into the apartment of our famous architect who guided us through the idea of space reconstruction and interior design inspired by works of art.

Color is an important aspect in interior design. Using color well is a complex matter that requires creativity, good judgment and often comes with experience Sonja Brstina there really is.

As the author of the project of this apartment, in which she herself lives, reveals to us, she often meets with clients who find it difficult to decide on an interior color and in this way she wants to show that such a choice can be very pleasant.

The key is in the dosage of the paint – if you don't have the courage for a stronger color, you can always turn to lighter tones.

“The whole idea of the apartment comes from the colors of the artworks of local artists.” As soon as I saw them, I imagined the future interior of my apartment,” says architect Sonja Brstina.

He singles out two artists as great inspiration: Nikola Žigon and Nina Milivojević whose picture was specially ordered from London.

Found Vs newly designed state

It is about the reconstruction of an apartment where the whole idea of the newly designed solution was – openness of the plan. In this name, the kitchen walls were abolished, thus the entire living room became a spacious part of the apartment where most of the time is spent.

The center of the apartment is occupied by the dining table, which invites open communication with the rest of the space as well as family members.

“In addition to meals, it is a place for us to draw, socialize and recount the events of that day,” explains Brstina.

Furniture tailored to the child

The choice of armchairs is a complete hit – they are rotating armchairs as the name suggests CODYan Italian brand Bontempi from Emmety. They are upholstered, rounded and represent a real playground for children.

As for the remaining rooms, they are much smaller in size, but enough to fit everything you need: beds and enough storage space.

The apartment can only be tidy if every object finds its place. Therefore, the whole apartment has a lot of closed storage space.

The main motive of the children's room is craftsmanship murals on the surface of two walls. The mural itself introduced colors that dominate the space, while the rest of the furniture is reduced to gentle colors.

For the master bedroom, it is important to highlight wallpapers as well as the headboard of the bed itself which was done by solid wood with live edge which gave the bedroom an additional accent.

“I believe that an apartment can be tidy if every item finds its place.” Therefore, the entire apartment has a lot of closed storage space, so it is not difficult to maintain.

Reconstruction of the bathroom

A new bathroom was obtained by combining an old bathroom and a small toilet. The idea is to get a larger functional space instead of two units.

The bathroom itself has no natural light, so the sense of intimacy that the room itself is looking for is achieved. This was also contributed by the very choice of dull green color palette that dominates the space.

Old construction as new construction

The decision to buy an old apartment seemed right because the area where the apartment is located was suitable.

From experience, Sonja says that old buildings can be arranged as well as new buildings, in some cases even better.

She advises her clients to pay attention to the location first of all when choosing their real estate, view, orientation and only the environment of the space in which he will live.
